March 2012
Woodcock Watch
Date/Time: Saturday, March 17th at 6:30pm
Location: John Morgan Farm

Observe an amazing sight in the spring skies at the “Woodcock Watch.” Participants will meet at the Centerburg Memorial Park at the intersection of US 36 and State route 314 for a short drive to where the birds have already been observed performing flights. This is a great way to spend a spring evening with the family. It starts with a short hike to the “dancing grounds” where everyone gets comfortable and enjoys sounds of spring as sunset nears. Then at a normally predictable time, we may hear the first “buzzing” sounds of the male woodcock. When that sound stops, we start looking for the “take off” flight which begins a spiraling lift off that sometimes reaches 300 feet in the air that is followed by a swooping descent.

Maple Syrup Event
Date/Time: Sunday, March 18th 2-5pm
Location: Fred Wade Farm on Route 3 next to Foster's Pharmacy

The sweet taste of spring can be enjoyed by area residents at the maple syrup event,  a program hosted by Fred and Kathryn Wade. It takes place in the “Sugaring Shack” near their home at 4594 Columbus Road, Centerburg, on US Route 36 just east of Centerburg. Fred and Kathryn Wade and their family continue a long treasured tradition and enterprise of making maple syrup in the Centerburg community each spring. Families can see how to tap a tree and hang a sap bucket, then go to the “Sugar Shack” where the Wades will demonstrate how wood is used to fire a large pan known as an evaporator to boil maple sap long enough to make syrup.
